Mastering the Inverted AeroPress: A Step-by-Step Brewing Guide

The AeroPress is a beloved brewing method known for its versatility and ability to produce rich, smooth coffee. At Artisti Coffee Roasters, we've been recommending it for years as a fantastic home brewing option. In this guide, we'll walk you through the inverted AeroPress method, a technique that simplifies the process and minimizes mess.

What You'll Need:

  • AeroPress
  • 17 grams of medium-fine ground coffee (we recommend our single-origin Ethiopian Yirgacheffe)
  • 260 grams of water (ideally at 90-94°C/194-201°F)
  • Scales (optional, but recommended for accuracy)
  • Temperature control kettle (or a regular kettle and a thermometer)
  • Metal or paper filter
  • Mug or cup

The Inverted AeroPress Method:

  1. Prepare the AeroPress: Insert the plunger a short way into the AeroPress and turn it upside down.
  2. Add Coffee: Add 17 grams of medium-fine ground coffee to the AeroPress chamber. Gently shake to level the grounds.
  3. Prepare the Filter: Place your metal or paper filter in the filter cap and set it aside.
  4. The Bloom: Pour 40 grams of water (90-94°C/194-201°F) over the grounds, ensuring all grounds are saturated. Let it bloom for 30 seconds. This allows the coffee to release CO2 and prepares it for brewing.
  5. Add Remaining Water: After the bloom, pour the remaining 220 grams of water into the AeroPress, filling it to the top. Stir gently to ensure even saturation.
  6. Brew: Let the coffee brew for 1 minute and 30 seconds.
  7. Attach the Filter: Carefully attach the filter cap to the AeroPress.
  8. The Press: Flip the AeroPress onto your mug. Press down slowly and steadily until you hear a hissing sound. This indicates the brewing process is complete.
  9. Enjoy! Your delicious AeroPress coffee is ready to enjoy.

Tips and Variations:

  • Adjust the coffee-to-water ratio to control the strength of your brew.
  • Experiment with different grind sizes for varying results.
  • Try different water temperatures to explore different flavor profiles.
